I feel like this should be common sense. You just don’t pet a dog unless you know it’s okay, but seeing as how many people I’ve had to tell I guess it’s not that common, but it does still make sense.

The main reason I felt the need to make this post is that a few weeks ago I learnt that service dogs are not required to wear any identifying markers of their job. They don’t have to wear a vest or a collar or anything else that would make them stand out.

Now how is this relevant you ask? Well, just imagine, you’re walking and see a cute dog! It seems well behaved enough and the owner is busy in conversation or with something else so you just reach down and start petting the dog. No harm done right? Wrong.

If that dog were on duty and you didn’t know you could be distracting it from it’s life-saving medical care that it provides.

Now, why don’t all service dogs wear vests you ask? Well, a good majority do. It makes going into public places like stores and restaurants a lot easier, but it also means attracting attention. It means getting questions from strangers and rude remarks, especially if you have an “invisible” disability. Or sometimes it’s simply just too hot out. So, a handler may choose to not beat their dog or have them wear any other indentifying factor of their work.

You never know who’s on duty and who’s not. “But what if the dog is being roudy and playful?” Maybe they’re taking a break from work, but that dog still needs to be ready to go in a moment’s notice and you may interfere with that.

So, just ask first please. Ask, “Can I pet your dog?” or any variation of that. And if you’re told no don’t throw a fit, just move on.

It’s not just service dogs. Many dogs do not like strangers. They may still be learning obedience. Many owners don’t like people petting their dogs because the don’t want their dogs to seek affection from anyone except them. Some people may also just want to be left alone. There are days where I just don’t want to interact with strangers. My dog is awesome! But I may have just been up all day/ night at work and haven’t gone to bed yet, because no one told me until I got home that we were out of cat food and There Will Be No Peace If The Cat Goddess Is Hangry and I just don’t want to interact with the world any more than I have to.

A simple “hey can I pet your dog?” Goes a long way.

Is it possible to train my dog to listen to me even though the rest of my family wants no part in the training? He’s just turned 5 and we’ve had him since he was 8 weeks old. My family gave up on training fairly quickly but I’d like to give it another go. I know he can do it, since he’s learned some tricks. But the respect isn’t there. You have to bribe him with treats.

Ah, see, here’s thing. Do you go to work because you respect your boss? Okay, maybe if you really like them and have a good relationship with them - but if you’re just expected to show up because you respect the people you’re working for, you’re not going to want to go on days that are sunny, or when you feel sick, or if there’s anything else you’d rather do. You go because you get something for doing so - you get a paycheck, and that is a thing you value enough to participate in your job even when you don’t really feel like it. Your dog is going to feel the same way about training.

In order for training to ever be successful, we have to totally trash-bin the idea that your dog should listen to you “out of respect.” Training is work, and so a) we need to motivate our animals to work with things they value and b) they deserve a paycheck for showing up and putting in the effort, just like people do at their jobs. Some dogs find the attention of their humans incredibly reinforcing and will work just for the attention, but for most dogs, the best paycheck you can give them is treats. It’s not bribing - we are exchanging money for work, just in dog currency. (And, honestly, most animals that work for attention as a reinforcer generally still require extra motivation if being asked to do something they find unpleasant).

Now that we’ve covered that, yes! Your dog can always learn. It’s never too late to start training an animal. I’d highly suggest checking out literature on positive reinforcement training (Don’t Shoot the Dog, by Karen Pryor, is my go-to entry literature on the topic). You’ll need to ask your family to work with you a little and not actively undo or contradict what you’re teaching your dog, but I bet you that once they see you’re excited about it and how your dog will pick it up and be excited about it too, they’ll be more invested in the idea too.
